Of all the cities in the United States, Chicago is my absolute favorite. It’s a big city, but there’s a midwestern friendliness that gives the city a comfortable feel. Navigating public transportation is incredibly easy (and honestly, traveling by foot will get you to many tourist attractions anyway). Without a doubt, there are a lot of things to do in Chicago, so put it high on your list of American cities to visit!
Since I love Chicago so much, I’ve teamed up with Hotel Felix to provide an awesome giveaway! Hotel Felix is a boutique hotel in the River North neighborhood of downtown Chicago, a prime location for restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. It’s also a quick walk away from art galleries, the Magnificent Mile, Washington Square Park, and more. It’s also close to “El” train stations and several bus lines if you’re headed down to Museum Campus, Navy Pier, or any of Chicago’s distinct neighborhoods.
The giveaway is now over. Congratulations to reader Ron B. who won a Michigan Avenue Madness package, which includes
- a 2-night stay at the Hotel Felix on the dates of your choice (some restrictions apply and based on availability)
- a gift bag filled with goodies and discount vouchers to stores and restaurants
- a $50 gift card to “The 900 Shops”, a huge shopping destination right around the corner from the hotel on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile
- an Exclusively 900 Card for discounts and incentives within The 900 Shops, including an additional signature gift if you make a $100+ shopping purchase
If you’re headed that way, here are my favorite things to do in Chicago, all easily reachable from Hotel Felix and perfect for your two-night getaway.
Take a Wendella Boat Tour
Whether or not you’ve ever been interested in architecture, the buildings in Chicago are really cool to look at. It’s one of the few places where the entire city seems to look great together, partially influenced by rebuilding the city after the fire of 1871. Wendella has a great cruise down the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan so you can see the city from the heart of it as well as the entire skyline while you’re on the lake.
Drink Your Way through Chicago’s Historical Bars
Chicago has a fascinating history and it would be a shame to visit the city and not hear at least a few stories about what shaped the city into what it is today. Of course, if you’re on vacation, a lecture or historical walking tour may not be high on your list of things to do. For a fun way to learn about Chicago, join Chicago DeTours for a a pub crawl through the city. You’ll visit three bars with great stories and learn about prohibition, jazz, theater, vices, and social clubs. You’ll get drinks and snacks along the way!
Indulge in Comfort Food
Eating is one of my favorite things to do in Chicago! You’ll find cuisine of every type and budget in the city, but you have to try the pizza. I’ve sampled several well-known deep dishes, and my favorite is at Pizzeria Due (619 N Wabash). This is fork and knife pizza, loaded with toppings, and downright delicious. Pair it with a local Goose Island beer (my favorites: Matilda and Sophie) and don’t bother trying to save room for dessert.
Go Up, Up, Up
You can walk to the Hancock Observatory in less than 15 minutes from Hotel Felix and don’t cheat by taxi because it’s a fun walk. Take the elevator up to the 94th floor for 360-degree views and even ice skating in winter months. Technically the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower) is higher, but there’s a good reason to head to the John Hancock Center instead. Instead of paying $15 for the observatory on the 94th floor, you can head to the Signature Room on the 95th floor instead and use that $15 to buy yourself a cocktail with a view. Ladies: don’t miss the bathroom.
Of course, you can also enjoy theater, comedy, sporting events, a dozen world-class museums, or just take advantage of the hotel spa. After all, there are plenty of things to in Chicago!
