I’m the type of traveler who is always on the go. I change cities every night or two, switching hotels along the way. That means a lot of packing and unpacking on my trips and an absolute need to stay organized on vacation. Knowing where everything is can be a huge time-saver (and stress-saver) and there’s no better way to keep track of your stuff than packing cubes. I’ve been using eBags packing cubes to organize my bag for vacation for two years now — and I’ll never go back to just throwing things in a suitcase again!
I bought my first packing cubes in 2011 and was instantly hooked! Now I have fifteen cubes in assorted colors and sizes.
Why Bother With Packing Cubes?
They’re perfect when you need to open your suitcase at airport security — just unzip the necessary cube and keep your underwear safely away from public inspection! Another unadvertised benefit is that they launder perfectly in my washing machine, so if you collect sand, dirt, or odors on your trip, just throw them in your next load of wash.
On my most recent trip to Nicaragua, I actually stayed put for a long time in Leon, but since I was in a hostel, I still didn’t have a set of drawers to unpack. Knowing which items were in each packing cube helped me find things quickly and quietly, so I didn’t wake up anyone else in the dorm!
Each packing cube has a double zipper pull, which remains easy to zip and unzip even the most bloated packing cubes after dozens (hundreds?) of uses. They also come with mesh tops so you can see in to find the cube you need quickly and great carrying handles so you can pull them out of a bag easily or carry them individually.
How to Organize Your Suitcase With Packing Cubes
Sometimes I pack each days’ clothing in a separate, small packing cube. Other times, I group items into each cube, such as all socks in a small cube and all shirts in a medium cube. Colors help me find things quickly. No matter what, I organize my bag using packing cubes so I can pull out as little as possible each time I need something.
eBags offers packing cubes in six different sizes:
Regular Packing Cubes:
- Small cube dimensions: 11″ x 6.75″ x 3″
- Medium cube dimensions: 13.75″ x 9.75″ x 3″
- Large cube dimensions: 17.5″ x 12.75″ x 3.25″
Slim Packing Cubes:
- Small cube dimensions: 6.5″ x 5″ x 2.75″
- Medium cube dimensions: 10″ x 5″ x 2.75″
- Large cube dimensions: 14″ x 5″ x 2.75″
What Size Packing Cubes to Buy
With all those sizes, it can be overwhelming choosing which to buy. In my opinion, the best option is a 6-piece assorted set, which comes with 1 each of the small, medium, small slim, and small medium.
As a light packer, I find the slim cubes most useful to fit in small bags, though the small regular cubes are also a great size. The regular medium cubes work great if you’re thinking about packing your suitcase in quarters (such as my upcoming 4-day trip to Iceland) or for bulky items like beach towels.
I’ll be honest: I’ve only found one practical use for the large cubes since they take up nearly half my suitcase. I throw an empty large cube into my suitcase at the beginning of the trip and collect dirty laundry until it fills up, keeping the rest of my clothes perfectly separated.
Using Packing Cubes For Things Other Than Travel
The obvious use of eBags packing cubes is to keep your bag organized on vacation, but I find them useful for my gym bag as well (keep those yoga clothes separate from spinning outfits) and especially great for backcountry camping trips when I don’t want to rummage around my backpack to find a clean pair of socks in the cold air!
The smallest packing cube is the perfect size for a first aid kit, which you can easily move around between suitcases, backpacks, cars, and scouting or soccer equipment. Nothing gets lost along the way and you’ll always have what you need right at hand.
