Considering I’m not an early riser, it’s weird that I think of mornings as “me time”. I get up around 7am, head to my breakfast nook, and take my coffee — black — with a view through my bay window to the bunnies who live in my backyard.
And then, after a cursory glance at Facebook, I dive into my travel reading. I use Feedly to read through my favorite travel blogs all in one spot and when I’m done, I start googling for more specifics on my upcoming trips. For those of you who support traveling spontaneously without plans or reservations…I say pish-posh; the research beforehand brings me too much joy.
Here’s what I’m having the most fun planning lately:
Girls Trip to Peru!
My sister trip to Peru is a BIG deal because it’s the destination we’ve been talking about for (literally) seven years. We’ve put it off, year after year, because we wanted to “do it right” and spend a few weeks on a circuit through the country.
Well, guess what? We still don’t have enough time, but we’re giving it our best anyway. We had to cut a few destinations, so we’ll “only” be seeing the Sacred Valley (including Machu Picchu and Cusco), Lima, and a quick sidetrip to Huacachina and Paracas. There’s a lot more to the country that will have to wait until next time.
What I’m Looking Forward to Most: Hiking in the Sacred Valley, swimming with sea lions.
What’s I’m Still Planning: I have no idea what I want to do in Lima other than eat.
Valentine’s Day in Vietnam
I’ve been known to rough it a little on my travels (like my night on an almost private island), but just like anyone, I like to be pampered sometimes. That means I need to go somewhere the dollar stretches further, and out of the choices I gave my husband, he chose Vietnam.
This is going to spoil us rotten. We dug into our stashes of frequent flyer miles to book business class tickets and we’re staying at high-end hotels. But you know me, and I’ve got lots of sightDOING planned as well. We’ve got unique activities planned for stays in Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, and Hoi An.
What I’m Looking Forward to Most: Making my own lanterns for the monthly lantern fest, fishing from my overwater villa.
What I’m Still Planning: Should I stopover in Hong Kong or Singapore on the way home?
The State I Love the Most
Alaska is a state I hold near and dear to my heart. I love the adventurous spirit, the rugged wilderness, and the outdoor activities that you find everywhere. I’ve been twice, but in a state that’s double the size of Texas, there’s still a lot to see.
So next summer, I’m going back. On the docket (for sure!) are Juneau and Haines, via state ferry, then an epic drive up to the Alaskan mainland on a ~750 mile portion of the Alcan Highway. This is Alaska like I’ve never done it before, but I expect extraordinary things.
What I’m Looking Forward to the Most: Wildlife watching (which I’ve had great success with previously in Alaska) and at least one fjord cruise.
What I’m Still Planning: With time for one more destination, it’ll either be camping in Glacier Bay National Park or Wrangell St. Elias National Park.
How Much is Too Much?
All said and done, the number of hours I spend reading and planning outweighs the number of hours I’ll actually be traveling. That’s ridiculous, I know. But seriously, if you’re going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars, shouldn’t you have fun with it?

Can you help me with the parts I’m still planning?
And where are you planning trips to?
